Alternative Ways of Teaching English

The process of learning a new language can be challenging because of the intricacies involved. However, alternative ways of teaching English come in handy to make it easy and enjoyable. To speak English and also write it well, the foundation you get as a learner determines your final command of the language itself.

The Lexical Approach is one of the best. This ensures that you have a better understanding of the phrases and words used in the language in this particular case-the English language. There is an in-depth study of lexemes as students are taught how one word can represent several meaning and how it is used in context.

The Direct Method of teaching English involves mastering and emphasis on phonetics, with the main ideas being focused on different aspects of speech. This method actually gives the student knowledge and more so, a better understanding through visualization. It also encourages learning through association. The Phonic Style is where English as a language is taught by making the student know the relationship between sounds and symbols.

The combinations of specific letters that is particularly able to make distinct sounds. Basically, phonics method is essential in decoding the written word to get its proper pronunciation and spellings.  There are some great resources for phonics such as BBC audiobooks that can be used for studying at home.

The other alternative ways of teaching English as a language are Translation method and Presentation-Practice method. The translation method allows a student to get words form their native language and later translate them to English as their foreign language. This methodology requires the student to be well-versed in their native language.

The Presentation- Practice Method, basics of the language are taught has three phases with the production being the last stage. The basic precepts of the language are taught then students put what they have learnt into writing. The last stage is the production stage; the learners are encouraged to be creative with the words or sentences learnt.
