The art of saving money while on the road is often a skill that is perfected over time. Much like an aged wine, experience gleaned on the road and thriftiness go hand in hand with budget backpacking adventures. It’s easy to blow your money on frivolous things; however, some may be surprised to find out it’s just as easy to make it stretch out. A successful backpacking trip has a lot to do with value for your money spent. The following are some tips to ensure you can keep your bill-fold plump while on the road experiencing the journey of a lifetime.

Coupon Codes

Sometimes I’m completely flabbergasted when I hear that many travellers and backpackers simply don’t do any extra research to see whether or not a purchase they are planning to make on a flight, hotel or attraction has a potential voucher codes. For the few seconds of time it takes to find voucher codes, it can literally save you hundreds of dollars on your next purchase. It’s something that every traveller should ensure they inquire about as often as possible.

Sharing Expenses

Travelling with a friend, family member or as a couple offers numerous benefits. Firstly, you won’t be alone and you have a companion to fall back on when things aren’t going well on any particular given day. Moreover, travelling with a mate allows you to save money. Where it’s most obvious is with items such as hotel rooms or taxi rides where you can split the bill as opposed to fronting alone.  By saving money on accommodation and transportation it can be spent on more fun and entertaining types of activities.

Booking in advance

The last bit of advice for the budget conscious traveller is to strongly consider booking your plane, hotel or attraction tickets in advance. More often than not, the best deals are to be found when booking several weeks or several months in advance. The reason for this is quite simple – companies want to ensure a guaranteed number of occupied slots.

Another tip is to make sure you get the best deals on exchange rates, so you get the most out of your cash!

Some good advice tips here, booking in advance can have its advantages and disadvantages…I tend to find the best deals are booked last minute. However I might not have the best seating, or even choice to destination.

  2. I am also very surprised that more people don’t use coupon/voucher codes.
Anytime we are purchasing online I will do a quick search to see if there is anything to save more. Even 10% is great!!! 🙂 Good tips!!

  3. I can add that If you’re comfortable couchsurfing is one of the best money saving if you are on the road., of course Couchsurfing is not just about saving money. Couchsurfing is a great way to meet like minded travelers such as yourself also they’ll be happy to show us around the place as well.
